It is less than 70 kilometres from the centre of Krakow and the vicinity of the Main Square to the famous museum Auschwitz if you take the toll motorway A4 and about 63 kilometres if you go via Liszki and Alwernia on the toll-free road number 780. The motorway journey is longer, but due to the motorway speed it takes less time. That’s how to get to Auschwitz using your own car.
The drive to Auschwitz by car will take about 1-1.5 hours. In heavy traffic you need to add a dozen or so minutes. You should expect the same time to get from Krakow to Auschwitz by bus. Private buses from Kraków to Oświęcim leave every several minutes from the very centre of the city from MDA bus station. The train journey will take about 2 hours so it is best not to go to Auschwitz by train.
It is worth remembering that visiting Auschwitz Museum in Oświęcim is free, and the town itself is very well connected with Krakow. Tickets for buses that go almost to the museum cost around 15 PLN. The cost of a return trip from Krakow to Auschwitz is therefore 30 PLN. This is definitely less than with travel agents.
