The Wawel Dragon near Wawel Castle and the Vistula Boulevards in Krakow is a popular tourist attraction that is not everyone’s favourite sculpture by Bronislaw Chromy. We have already written more about the sculpture itself and its history in the text Where is the Wawel Dragon in Kraków? When is it breathing fire?

Many tourists flock to Wawel Castle to see the Wawel Dragon breathing fire. There is a system installed in the sculpture that starts and lights the flame every few, about 3-4 minutes. Then the Wawel Dragon breathes fire. Many disappointed tourists going to Wawel Castle wonder why the Wawel Dragon does not breathe fire.

The gas installation inside the dragon sculpture is old and there are problems with the dragon’s power supply. Every time the installation is reset, there are problems until it cycles back into working order and then the dragon breathes fire at irregular intervals, even for several hours.

Problems with the flame can occur especially during periods of poorer weather. Theoretically, the Wawel Dragon at the Wawel Castle in Krakow breathes fire every 5 minutes around the clock.
